Boat Sheer Plank

boat sheer plank

When planking from the sheer down, i always put the clamps on the forward face of the frame, under the plank, and inside out—that is, with the threaded part inside the boat. this arrangement keeps them out of the way of the fastenings, which are always staggered according to a fixed pattern—the lower one toward the after edge of the frame. The top line of the boat must have a nice ‘sheer’, a nice line from forward to aft, whereby the bow is always higher than the stern. for boats from zeeland the rubbing strake must have a small s-bend from the stern going forward, which is slightly more or less depending on the type of boat.. Boat building is the design and construction of boats and their systems. this includes at a minimum a hull, with propulsion, mechanical, navigation, safety and other systems as a craft requires.. damaged boat mid-reconstruction; carvel planking partially removed.

boat sheer plank Whew! and this is the 'easy' method. i can only imagine what it would be like to cut the planks out of cedar and rivet them into place. that will have to wait for my next boat. one interesting complication: the sheer plank was longer than my pattern stock, so i had to make my first scarf, in 1/8" luan plywood. it was pretty easy to do.. As the each plank is fitted it is riveted to its predecessor. the final plank is referred to as the “sheer” plank, the sheer being the line which is formed by the top edge of the planking. the final shape of the sheer is then worked, usually with the aid of a batten and by eye to determine the most favourable shape and curve..
